Terms of Use: AdvisorCore

1. Agreement

These Terms of Use ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Tamar Shapiro ("we," "us") governing your use of the AdvisorCore mobile application (the "App"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App and delete it from your device.

2. Who may use the App

You must be at least 13 years old to use the App. The App is not intended for and may not be used by children under 13.

If you are under 18, you may use the App only if a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf. By using the App while under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has done so. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their child's use of the App and are bound by these Terms with respect to that use.

3. What this App is, and is not

This App helps you record and organize information about your own academic profile, activities, college list, and deadlines, and displays publicly available information about colleges.

This App does not provide:

College counseling, admissions advice, or educational consulting services
Legal, financial, tax, or professional advice of any kind
Predictions or guarantees about admission to any school
Official deadlines, application requirements, policies, or institutional information

This App is a supplement to, and never a replacement for, your own research, your school counselor, and direct communication with colleges.

4. Estimates, ratings, and scores

Features such as Reach/Target/Safety ratings, activity strength scores, list balance feedback, and improvement suggestions are produced by simplified formulas applied to data you enter and to public datasets. They are rough estimates for planning purposes only.

They cannot predict admissions outcomes. Admissions decisions are holistic and depend on essays, recommendations, institutional priorities, applicant pools, and many other factors the App cannot see or measure. Highly qualified applicants are denied by schools labeled "Safety" every year. You should not make decisions about where to apply based solely on these ratings.

5. Deadlines are your responsibility

No public database publishes per-school application deadlines. Every date in the App was either entered by you or seeded from generic templates of typical dates. Dates in the App are not official and may be wrong.

You are solely responsible for identifying, verifying, and meeting all deadlines that apply to you, by checking each college's official admissions website. We are not responsible for any missed deadline, late submission, or lost opportunity, including any resulting from an incorrect date shown in the App, a reminder that did not arrive, or the App failing to function.

6. Third-party data

College information in the App comes from public datasets published by the U.S. Department of Education (College Scorecard) and the Urban Institute (Education Data Portal). This data is provided by those organizations, not by us.

We do not create, verify, correct, or control this data. It may be incomplete, outdated by a year or more, or inaccurate. We make no representation or warranty regarding the accuracy of this data and are not responsible for any consequence for relying on it. Always confirm college information with the college directly.

7. AI features

The App includes an advisor feature. On supported devices this uses an on-device AI language model; the App can also generate a summary of your information for you to use with a third-party AI service of your choosing.

AI-generated responses may be inaccurate, incomplete, or wrong. They are not professional advice. Do not rely on them for any consequential decision without independent verification. If you choose to paste an exported summary into a third-party service, that service's own terms and privacy policy govern what happens to it, and we have no responsibility for it.

8. Your responsibilities

You agree that you will:

Provide accurate information about yourself, and understand that inaccurate input produces inaccurate output
Independently verify all deadlines, requirements, and college information
Consult your school counselor before making significant decisions
Maintain your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose
Use the App only for lawful, personal, non-commercial purposes

You agree that you will not:

Submit any App-generated text as your own work in a college application, or otherwise use the App to engage in plagiarism or academic dishonesty
Misrepresent your academic record, activities, or credentials
Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or interfere with the App
Use the App to harass, abuse, or harm anyone, or to violate any law
Use automated means to access the public data sources through the App

Academic integrity is your responsibility. Submitting work that is not your own can result in rescinded offers, disciplinary action, or expulsion. We are not responsible for consequences arising from your misuse of the App.

9. Your data and device security

The App stores your information locally on your device. We operate no servers, do not collect your information, and have no access to it. See our Privacy Policy.

Because your data is stored on your device, its security depends on the security of your device, your operating system, your passcode, and any backup services you use, none of which we control or are responsible for. We are not responsible for unauthorized access to your device, loss of data caused by device failure, loss, theft, OS updates, app deletion, or any backup service.

We cannot recover your data. Since we never receive it, no copy of it exists outside your device. Export a backup regularly if the information matters to you.

10. No warranty

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or available, that any information in it is accurate or current, that notifications will be delivered, or that using it will produce any particular result, including admission to any college.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, OPPORTUNITY, OR EDUCATIONAL OR ECONOMIC BENEFIT, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE APP.

This includes, without limitation, any claim arising from a missed deadline, a rejected or rescinded application, reliance on an estimate or AI response, inaccurate third-party data, loss of data stored on your device, or unauthorized access to your device.

Because the App is provided free of charge, our total aggregate liability to you for any claim relating to the App will not exceed ten U.S. dollars ($10).

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for fraud, gross negligence, or willful misconduct.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your misuse of the App, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian agrees to this on your behalf.

13. Apple

These Terms are between you and us only, not with Apple Inc. Apple is not responsible for the App or its content, and has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for it. If the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price (if any); Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the App. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claim relating to the App, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, or intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

14. Intellectual property

The App, its design, and its content (other than third-party data and information you enter) are owned by us and protected by copyright. You receive a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App. You keep all rights to the information you enter.

College and university names, and marks such as SAT, ACT, PSAT, and Common App, are the property of their respective owners and are used only to identify those institutions and tests. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of them.

15. Changes and termination

We may modify these Terms at any time, with or without notice to you. Updated Terms will be posted here with a new version number and date. Where changes are material, you may also be asked to accept them in the App. It is your responsibility to review these Terms periodically. Continuing to use the App after changes are posted means you accept them.

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the App at any time without liability. You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it.

16. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in that state, and you consent to their jurisdiction.

17. Miscellaneous

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the balance of these Terms remain in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the App.
